You would think that is someone is measuring you, your clothes would fit perfect. If you want a wool coat you go to the wool booth silk, denim, corduroy, cotton and so on. It is hard to stop at one (kind of like Lay's potato chips). If we want tweed pants we visit the tweed lady's stall and sort through a dizzying array of material.

We tell him what we want and he drags us around this huge building gathering material for the latest creation. Mainly he says, "I know! I know!" when really I don't think he knows. Our favorite tailor is Luke, because he speaks a little English. One of our favorite pastimes is traveling to Dalian a couple of times a month to visit the tailor. But for the teachers, we adore going to get clothes tailor-made. In China it is a sign of wealth (so I have been told) to buy your clothes ready-made in a store. When I looked at them startled, they laughed. It was more of a.'is she real?' or 'Is she well fed?' That is all I can guess. I turned my head to watch the ceremony and one of them pinched me! Not hard mind you, but a pinch nevertheless on my upper arm. I looked beside me and they smiled and began to ask me questions that I had no answers to. Little did I know a small gathering of old women was watching me. I got to stand in the doorway and watch while people prayed. There was an amazing ceremony with a some sort of priest and priestess dressed in colorful robes and feather headdresses. Women were burning candles, and folding paper into little shapes that they tossed into a basket (to burn later I think). This was not a tourist attraction, but was a working temple. Rodrigo and I saw a temple high on a hill and decided to explore. Rodrigo and I wanted to tool around and Allison and Britt wanted to find a spa. One day in Hangzhou we decided to split up. I have a feeling the other ladies would have been more gentle. He pointed us in the right direction, where I proceeded to get a painful massage. We continued down the street when the man who suggested the massage in the first place rode by on his motorcycle. I knew it would be one of the worst massages ever, since this was not her specialty, but Allison would have none of it. I thought I could give one of the ladies an hour off. Rodrigo yelled, "Not the one with the pink lights!" I didn't have to ask what he meant. Britt and I ran to look inside and saw scantily clad women waving at us. It said massage and had a nice pink light glowing in the window. We ambled down the street when I saw a place that looked promising. We decided to go find the place he suggested. He said his mother-in-law was staying here. I asked him why he was at the hotel if he lived few blocks away. We walked back down and on our way to talk to the front desk a man who spoke some English came and told us a nice place to go to a few blocks down. To our relief, (but growing curiosity) no one answered the door. For a minute we thought WE would be the ones giving someone a massage. We thought that was kind of weird that a regular room would be the massage room, but we trooped up there and knocked on the door, worried with what we would find. The first clerk said no, but the second clerk said yes, go to room 8721.

We didn't know where to go, so we walked into the first hotel we spotted to see if they had a massage room. You would think we would learn from that incident, but we continue to make gaffes. Five minutes later I look over and Britt is having a conversation in English with the gentleman she just threatened. She turns to the man next to her and says, "Yeah! Don't steal my friend Eli's wallet or she'll kick your ass!" I see the man's eyebrows raise, but I don't think much more about. What is funny about Britt is she thinks no one around us can ever speak English. We talked with Eli to get the scoop and returned to our seats. She yelled, "No! That's mine!" and snatched it back out of his hand. She turned around as he was removing her wallet. But no, she had caught a man with his hand in her purse. I figured it was just Eli getting pushed. As I was getting a seat I heard some yelling in English. Britt and I entered the subway first, because I love playing the pushing game with Chinese people.

I was going to tell her to zip it up, but didn't want to be one of those know-it-all travelers we had just been discussing at lunch previously. While walking to get on the subway one night I noticed my friend Eli's purse was wide open and dangling from her arm.
